As our confidence grew stronger, we’ve gradually enabled the import feature for more and more people. Today it is enabled for all!
Again we’ve set the bar high: unlike most personal finance apps, we don’t want to throw on you the work of converting the file to be imported to a certain format. Who has the time to convert each file they want to import, week after week, month after month? We want the app to do the hard work, not us.
So we’ve enabled the app to learn from you the meaning of the imported data. It learns once, it never forgets.
Let’s have a look on how that works:
1. The “Import” action can be found in the main menu:

2. Pick a file, and it will display it. Then the learning process begins:

3. You’ll need to set 5 columns: Date, Account, Credit, Debit and Details. If there’s only one column for both credit and debit, set that column to “Amount”. Pick “Ignore” for all the rest, to get them out of the picture:

4. Most bank statements come with a header row, we’ll need to ignore it:

5. Then we need to teach the app to convert account numbers to the names we’re using for them in Finance41:

6. There’s no tracking without tags, so we’ll need to teach it to spot transaction details which define the tags:

7. Lastly, some transactions are transfers from one account to another. We’ll define a rule for it:

The first time it will seem like a lot of work, but all the rules are saved. The next time it will apply them automatically and it will be like magic.
We’re super excited to end the “all manual input” era. We’re dedicated to make this feature work with world wide formats, so please sent to us any files that fail to import.
As always, the greatest improvements come from you, so we want your feedback on this. Please write to us if something goes wrong or right at hi@finance41.com
Have a great week!
